| How is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Prevented?
People who are diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder may ask themselves what went wrong for them to develop the disorder. They may feel frightened, confused, or angry at the diagnosis. They may wonder what they did in order to have such a disorder. The fact of the matter is that doctors and scientists both say there is not one definitive thing anyone can do to prevent developing the disorder, better known as OCD.
Important Steps to Consider
While the disorder itself has no known methods of prevention, there are some important steps people who do go on to develop the disease should consider. First, people who are at an increased risk for developing OCD should be watchful for any symptoms they may develop that could signify the beginning of the disease. People with immediate family members who have the disorder should be especially cautious, as should people with other anxiety disorders. Under high stress situations, these people may display symptoms of OCD.
Since the disorder cannot be stopped from developing, many people who have had the disorder most of their lives may not think to schedule a doctor’s appointment. Even people who have just developed symptoms of OCD in their later years may be too embarrassed to make that all important phone call. Yet the best way to prevent further symptoms of OCD and to manage the disorder is to pursue treatment. Pursuing a course of treatment, whether it medication, therapy, or a combination of both, is the best kind of action a person can take in order to prevent more severe symptoms from developing.
The key to preventing further symptoms is to follow your doctor’s orders exactly as described. You should take all medications as your doctor has prescribed at a consistent time each day so you do not forget one. Keep reminders for doctor’s and therapist’s appointments and keep good, clear lines of communication between yourself and your doctor open. The best thing to do is to contact your doctor if you feel the symptoms you have are growing worse. The disease itself may not be able to be prevented, but with treatment, it is possible to prevent symptoms from worsening in most cases.
