When is it Best to Call a Doctor?

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a serious mental illness. Like people who have depression, patients who have OCD may also experience suicidal thoughts or tendencies. In these cases, it is best to seek help immediately by calling 911 or your nearest healthcare provider. The suicidal thoughts patients with OCD may experience are no less serious than those had by patients suffering from depression or severe anxiety.

The Sooner the Better

In terms of patients with OCD, the sooner you call a doctor, the better. If you recognize any symptoms of the disease in yourself or a loved one, call to set up an examination immediately. Doing so can start you on the right path to successful treatment. With treatment, people with OCD can lead an improved life. Seeking treatment if you are experiencing symptoms can also improve the lives of your friends or loved ones, as they will likely be frustrated if they do not know what has been causing your behavior.

For people with OCD, waiting to call a doctor is not an appropriate method of dealing with the disease. People with the disorder may want to seek help from a person who has first-hand experience dealing with OCD. These people can include a psychiatrist, family practitioner, or a psychiatric nurse. These individuals can help you to deal with your disorder, and they can also prescribe medications to treat the illness. Mental health counselors and social workers, as well as psychologists, can all help you to deal with your disorder, but they cannot prescribe medications.

Calling a doctor can sometimes be a difficult thing for people with OCD to do. It is important, though, to learn as much about the disease as you can and learn to recognize the symptoms. Getting help should not be embarrassing and in fact, will make it easier to lead a more normal life.
